ECtHR awards 60,000 euros of compensation to persons involved in one of Natalia Estemirova’s last cases
The European Court of Human Rights has pronounced its decision in the case of "Makaeva vs. Russia". In Russia, the case was investigated by Natalia Estemirova and Akhmed Gisaev, employees of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial". Aima Makaeva, a resident of Grozny, the applicant in the case, filed a complaint about kidnapping of her son Apti Zainalov by law enforcers. The ECtHR has found out that the kidnappers were state agents. Furthermore, the ECtHR has found violations of the applicant's rights and awarded the mother of the kidnapped man a compensation of 60,000 euros.
Krasnodar: "EcoWatch" activist Shevchenko attacked while filming tree pruning
On September 17, in Krasnodar, Dmitry Shevchenko, the deputy coordinator of the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" (EcoWatch), was attacked while he was filming the process of tree pruning in the course of the reconstruction works conducted in the Friendship Park. An unidentified man, who led the works, knocked out a video camera from the activist's hands, the website of the "EcoWatch" reports.
Moscow hosts solo picket in support of Krasnodar ecologist Evgeny Vitishko
On September 17, in Moscow, in front of the building of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation, a solo picket was held in support of Evgeny Vitishko, a Krasnodar ecologist, serving his sentence at the penal settlement-colony in the Tambov Region. The solo picket was held by Sophia Rusova, the Adviser to the Chairman of the "Yabloko" Party, the press service of the political organization reports.
"Rodina" candidate for Volgograd Regional Duma demands to recount ballots at 10 polling stations
On September 16, a recount of votes at Polling Stations Nos. 312 and 315 of the Voroshilov Territorial Election Commission (TEC) of Volgograd changed the outcomes of the voting in favour of Gennady Murylyov, the candidate from the "Edinaya Rossiya" (United Russia) Party. His opponent from the "Rodina" (Motherland) Party – Natalia Latyshevskaya – demanded a vote recount at other 10 polling stations.
