Today, local MPs have appointed Valery Bganba, the Speaker of the Parliament of Abkhazia, to be the Acting President of the republic. The early presidential election is scheduled for August 24 this year.

Today at a meeting, residents of the Kirov District of Volgograd have demanded to improve and repair the local road network, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports. In total, the event was attended by about 50 vehicles and nearly 100 people.

On May 30 in Moscow, about 200 people rallied against removal of the candidacies of Aliy Totorkulov and Ruslan Kurbanov from the elections to the Public Chamber (PC) of the Russian Federation. According to Sultan Togonidze, the campaign manager of Aliy Totorkulov, some PC members went out to meet the protesters, but no officials of the Chamber ever appeared.

In Azerbaijan, election campaigns are held in unequal conditions, since candidates from the ruling party use administrative resource. This was stated by participants of the conference held in Baku. Tonight, two persons were killed in the shelling from a car near the village of Uchkent of the Kumtorkala District of Dagestan. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for Dagestan.

Residents of Astrakhan, whose houses were damaged by fire on March 25, complain that till present, they have not received information whether they will be granted new houses. Astrakhan administration has disseminated the information that only tenants of three municipal burned apartments were granted "equal housing under the social contract of rent."

Abkhazia has no intention to become a part of the Russian Federation; and the republic has no plans to review the possibility of changing the status of an independent state. This was announced by the Interim People's Council of Abkhazia.

Today, following the results of the meeting with the leadership of the city UVD (Interior Department), human rights defenders and members of public organizations of Sochi, have made a decision to repeatedly inspect the ROVDs (District Interior Divisions). During the today's meeting, the activists summed up the results of the inspection held on April 21-30.

This school year, in the Pravoberezhny District of North Ossetia, 483 pupils are school graduates; of them, 48 schoolchildren are former pupils of School No. 1 in Beslan, which in 2004 was captured by terrorists. Participants of the interregional conference "Human rights and international relations in Northern Caucasus" held on May 24 in Pyatigorsk have adopted a resolution to create the Centre for Human Rights Monitoring and Protection in Southern Russia. In Abkhazia, the opposition has stated that Alexander Ankvab, who has refused to voluntarily leave his position of the president of the republic, has no chances to regain power. The Abkhaz opposition claims that it will form the interim government within the next two days.

The Coordinating Council of oppositional political forces of Abkhazia has announced, at a rally of the opposition, the formation of the Interim People's Council, comprising notable politicians and public figures of the republic. Meanwhile, in the evening on May 29, the Abkhazian Parliament offered the President to resign. The MPs also expressed a vote of non-confidence to the Prime Minister.
