A resident of Kalmykia has been convicted of financing terrorism.

A resident of Kalmykia has been sentenced to a long prison term, whom investigators called a "follower of radical ideology." The court found him guilty of transferring money to a member of a terrorist organization.

"Caucasian Knot" reported that a 38-year-old resident of the Sarpinsky district of Kalmykia was charged in June with financing terrorism. The man was taken into custody.

The court issued a guilty verdict against a 39-year-old resident of Kalmykia, who was involved in a case of financing terrorism. According to the prosecution and the court, in March 2020, he sent an online money transfer to the account of a member of a terrorist organization.

In the case materials, which were investigated by the republican FSB department, the man is referred to as a "follower of radical ideology." Law enforcement does not specify which ideology and terrorist organization are being referred to.

At the time of the transfer, the "criminal was aware" that his money would be used to support terrorist activities, as noted in the message from the Investigative Committee of Kalmykia on Telegram.

The court sentenced the defendant to eight years and six months of imprisonment. According to the verdict, he must spend the first two years in prison, with the remainder of the sentence in a strict regime colony.

The investigation's message does not indicate whether the defendant pleaded guilty. It also does not specify the exact amount that was transferred to the account of the banned organization. "Caucasian Knot" currently has no comments from the defendant or his lawyer regarding the verdict and plans for appeal.

The article on financing terrorism (part 1.1 of article 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) provides for a prison term of eight to fifteen years.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that in September, it became known about the arrest of another resident of Kalmykia on similar charges. Security forces claimed that a 36-year-old native of the republic admitted guilt in the committed crime.
