At least 4901 fighters from the North Caucasus Federal District and 4949 military personnel from the Southern Federal District have been officially recognized as killed during the special operation in Ukraine.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", as of October 7, at least 9800 fighters from southern Russia were officially recognized as killed in the military operation in Ukraine: 4872 from the North Caucasus Federal District and 4928 from the Southern Federal District.

"Caucasian Knot" maintains a named list of natives from the North Caucasus Federal District and Southern Federal District who were killed in the military operation. The list is compiled in accordance with existing laws and based on data announced by officials - from governors to village heads, as well as representatives of law enforcement agencies.

According to "Caucasian Knot" data as of October 17, representatives of authorities and law enforcement agencies officially recognized at least 9850 fighters from southern Russia as killed in the military operation: 4901 from the North Caucasus Federal District and 4949 from the Southern Federal District.

The highest number of fatalities continues to be from Dagestan - 2158. The deaths of 979 fighters from Stavropol, 593 from North Ossetia, 485 from Kabardino-Balkaria , 265 from Chechnya , 215 from Ingushetia, and 206 from Karachay-Cherkessia have also been confirmed.

Among the regions of the Southern Federal District, the highest number of fatalities (1854) is from Volgograd region. Also recognized as killed are 1029 fighters from Rostov region, 891 from Krasnodar Krai, 764 from Astrakhan region, 270 from Kalmykia, and 141 from Adygea.

The actual losses among combatants from the North Caucasus may be significantly higher than officially recognized. This situation is typical for all regions of the North Caucasus Federal District, but is especially relevant for Chechnya: Ramzan Kadyrov in February 2023 called on regional leaders not to disclose the number of killed. "I do not understand when regional leaders trumpet the number of casualties in the special military operation. I have a question: for what? There is no need to manipulate the topic of our heroes, writing that so many died in one region and so many in another," he stated.

On September 21, 2022, Vladimir Putin announced "partial mobilization". On October 28 of the same year, the Minister of Defense reported to the president about its completion, but no corresponding decree followed. After the announcement of mobilization, attempts were recorded in the southern regions of Russia to mobilize people who, due to age or health conditions should not be sent to the combat zone.

The first representative of the authorities to report that a Russian soldier was killed in the special military operation was Sergey Melikov, who was then the head of Dagestan. On February 26, 2022, he reported that officer Nurmagomed Gadzhimagomedov was killed in Ukraine.

State awards, memorial plaques, and appearances on "Channel One" do not guarantee families of the killed support from the state, as stated in the material of "Caucasian Knot" "Three comrades served: how authorities deprive families of killed volunteers of benefits", which describes the stories of killed fighters, including from Krasnodar Krai.
