A native of Kuban received a sentence for comments online
The military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced a resident of the Krasnodar region to six years in a penal colony for comments in which law enforcement found justification and propaganda of terrorism.
A resident of Kuban was charged with justifying terrorism on the internet (part 2 of article 205.2 of the Criminal Code of Russia), which provides for a prison term of five to seven years. The case was investigated by the regional FSB office. In addition, he was accused of illegal cultivation (part 1 of article 231 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and possession (part 1 of article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) of narcotic substances for personal use.
Courts in southern Russia regularly sentence local residents to real prison terms for publications on social networks under the article on justifying terrorism via the internet. It is impossible to establish the actual number of such sentences, as not all cases of justifying terrorism make it into public court registries.
The man's case was considered by the Southern District Military Court. According to the verdict, in 2024, the accused, while at home in the Krasnodar region, published online "comments justifying terrorism and its propaganda," the regional prosecutor's office reported today.
The court sentenced the resident of Kuban to six years in a general regime colony and confiscated his mobile phone for state revenue.
The agency did not specify what exactly the man's comments were about, on which platform they were published, and whether the defendant agreed with the charges. The prosecutor's office also did not disclose the age and occupation of the accused.
According to the open registry of the Southern District Military Court, Dmitry Nenashov was charged with four episodes of justifying terrorism. The case was submitted for consideration in early July and was reviewed over four sessions; the verdict for Nenashov was announced today.
In the registry of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring, his name, despite the verdict under the "terrorist article," was not listed as of 23:00 Moscow time on October 16. The "Caucasian Knot" currently does not have comments from Dmitry Nenashov or his lawyer regarding the verdict.
The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that in early October, law enforcement detained a 36-year-old resident of Sochi on charges of justifying terrorism due to his comments in a messenger.
