The incident in Shaki turned into mutual accusations among commentators.
A resident of the village of Shaki should be held accountable for wounding an Azerbaijani soldier, Azerbaijani commentators believe. She was defending herself and her children, Armenian-named users countered. Social media users also reminded about the attacks by soldiers of the Russian base in Gyumri on residents of Armenia.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", on October 2, a court in Armenia arrested Azerbaijani conscript soldier Nasimi Musaev for two months, who was detained on October 1 after the incident in the village of Shaki in the Syunik region. According to the Armenian Prosecutor General's Office, Musaev entered a house and opened fire, wounding a 38-year-old woman, and two of her children also required medical assistance. A criminal case has been initiated against Musaev on five charges, including illegal border crossing, illegal arms trafficking, violation of the inviolability of the home, and causing serious harm to health. The resident of the village of Shaki, Ani Avetisyan, who was wounded by the shot of the Azerbaijani soldier, underwent her first surgery in Yerevan, and her condition is stable. Armenian public figures demand to find out how an armed Azerbaijani soldier penetrated the village.
The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan reported that the soldier had unlawfully left his unit in the Lachin direction and had been wanted since September 26. The version of accidental border crossing caused a dispute on social media: users from Azerbaijan suggested that the soldier got lost in the mountains, while users from Armenia questioned how an armed person could travel nearly 20 kilometers deep into the country.
A publication about the operation of the wounded Azerbaijani soldier's victim, Ani Avetisyan from the Syunik village, gained over 800 comments on the "Caucasian Knot" Facebook page.
In the discussion, different interpretations of the incident collide: some commentators consider the woman's actions as family protection and point out the presence of an armed soldier on foreign territory, while others question the circumstances of the soldier's injury and insist on the need to assess the actions of both sides.
The demand to hold the resident of Shaki accountable provoked a heated reaction among commentators
Some participants in the discussion believe that the mere fact of wounding the soldier requires separate attention, regardless of the circumstances of his presence in the house. Comments raise questions about the possible punishment of the woman and how the Armenian side reacts to the incident.
"Why is the Armenian side silent about the soldier's injury? And the fact that this woman wounded him with a knife - isn't that also a crime? I wonder if she will be punished for this?" - asked Naza Mustafaeva.
Other participants consider the woman's actions a reaction to the appearance of an armed person in her home. At the center of their argument is the right to defend oneself and loved ones in a situation they perceive as a threat.
He crossed the border, attacked a woman with children, and she shouldn't defend her family?
"Don't make him an innocent lamb. He was armed, and anyone would try to protect their family," countered Melkon Aslanyan.
"He crossed the border, attacked a woman with children, and she shouldn't defend her family?" - exclaimed Diana Mirzoyan.
"For what? For protecting her children?" - writes Natalie Danielyan.
Participants in the discussion evaluate the presence of a firearm with the soldier differently. Some consider the weapon a normal attribute of service, while others see it as a circumstance that increases the danger of the situation for those in the house.
"A weapon is an attribute of a soldier, and he has no right to drop or lose it. Don't you understand that the soldier got lost, wandered for 4 days hungry and confused? And the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, in turn, informed the Armenian side," believes Naza Mustafaeva.
"Only he and the investigation know the truth. He shot at her and the children, and for that, he will be punished. She was defending herself and her children," pointed out Varui Terian.
"A woman in her home was attacked by a foreign soldier who illegally entered her house, received a gunshot wound, her children were injured, and you dare to call for her to be judged?" - exclaimed Karen Babayan.
The incident sparked debates
Comments discuss how the soldier ended up on foreign territory and why he was not stopped earlier.
If your "valiant soldiers" were guarding the borders, he wouldn't have gotten so deep into enemy territory. He walked 20 kilometers in 4 days.
"By the way, if your "valiant soldiers" were guarding the borders, he wouldn't have gotten so deep into enemy territory. He walked 20 kilometers in 4 days," wrote Naza Mustafaeva.
"Anyone who wants can cross," believes Vuqar Amirxanov.
Some participants question the very sequence of events and suggest considering different versions of what happened. In particular, they draw attention to the presence of firearms with the soldier and the nature of the injuries sustained.
"The question arises: was there even an attack, or is this a performance?" - wrote Lonely Traveler.
"Listen, nothing happened there, it's a theater, your supposedly wounded woman was not seen as wounded by any of the villagers," wrote Lana Aliyeva.
"The Armenian Ministry of Health: eight centimeters of shattered femur removed, three surgeries, saving the leg. Are the surgeons also a theater?" - asks Vahan Muradyan.
Some commentators suggest clarifying the circumstances of the incident with the participation of representatives from both countries. This position emphasizes fact-checking and establishing responsibility.
"I would rather have Azerbaijan and Armenia investigate together, at least this time they will hear each other - guilty or not guilty," wrote Qafur Qədimalıev.
What else did he have to do for you to condemn him? At least in your soul. He almost repeated the feat of the Russian soldier from the base in Gyumri.

Cases of murders by Russian soldiers were recalled in the context of what happened
The 102nd military base of the Southern Military District in Gyumri is part of the group of Russian troops in the Caucasus. The term of the agreement with Armenia for the placement of the base was extended in August 2010 until 2044, according to a report by the "Caucasian Knot" about the 102nd Russian military base.
Recall that on the night of December 3, 2018, 57-year-old Gyumri resident Julieta Gukasian was beaten, who later died in the hospital. Russian soldier Andrey Razgildeev was detained, facing up to ten years in prison for causing serious harm to health, resulting in the victim's death by negligence. Armenia handed over the accused to the Russian side, and he is under arrest at the 102nd base, it was reported at that time. In 2024, the Shirak court decided for the fifth time to resume the investigation into the murder of Gyumri resident Julieta Gukasian. However, the accused has not appeared in court even once, and Gukasian's daughter and human rights activists doubted that he was under arrest at the Russian military base.
Against the backdrop of Gukasian's murder, a rally was held demanding the withdrawal of the military base, and its participants recalled other cases of crimes by Russian soldiers against Armenian citizens, in particular, the murder of the Avetisyan family. In both cases, the culprits of the tragedy were soldiers of the 102nd Russian base stationed in Gyumri.
From 1999 to 2015, at least 11 residents of Gyumri died in incidents involving Russian soldiers, according to a report by the "Caucasian Knot" "Gyumri: how the Russian base harmed local residents". The most resonant was the murder of seven members of the Avetisyan family on January 12, 2015. The soldier of the 102nd Russian base Valery Permyakov was found guilty of this crime and sentenced to life imprisonment. During the investigation, residents of Armenia repeatedly held protests, demanding that local, not Russian law enforcement agencies handle the case.
In 2017, residents of Armenia answered the question of the "Caucasian Knot" about whether the base serves as a source of calm for them or, on the contrary, anxiety. The question was raised against the backdrop of the verdict for the murder of the Avetisyans and incidents involving Russian soldiers. Thus, in the two years preceding the survey, from 2015 to 2017, six soldiers were killed, died in accidents, or were found hanged. Two more soldiers were injured in fights.
Some commentators pointed out that there are no significant changes in relations, as individual cases cannot be used to judge all soldiers. Others noted that tension towards Russian soldiers is present, although the military base itself plays a deterrent role for Armenia's neighbors.
