"Employees of the Marneuli District Police Department of Kvemo Kartli detained one person on charges of forcing a minor family member into marriage. The investigation established that the accused, motivated by intolerance and gender discrimination, forced her minor granddaughter to marry a man from the same village against her will. As a result of the investigative activities, the police detained the woman as a suspect," reports "Georgia Online" citing the agency.
The investigation is being conducted under Article 11 prima 150 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for imprisonment for up to 4 years.
In Georgia, the problem of forced and early marriages is relevant. In November 2019, after the case of the abduction of a 15-year-old girl, NGOs in Georgia proposed to introduce programs in schools to prevent early marriages. It is necessary to raise awareness about early marriages among school students, noted the head of the NGO "Association of Young Lawyers" Sulkhan Saladze.
In cases of child marriages, the rights of both genders are violated, but girls face much more difficulties – almost always, marriage completely excludes their participation in public life. Girls are isolated from family and friends, in most cases forced to drop out of school, they find themselves in a more difficult economic situation in case of pregnancy and often become victims of domestic violence, as stated in the material "How early marriages lead to tragedies in Georgia" published on "Caucasian Knot". Also on "Caucasian Knot" is published the material "Early marriages in Georgia: tradition or bad habit?".
