Beydemirli reported on the violation of rights in the colony.
The convicted former deputy Nazim Beydemirli in Azerbaijan appealed to the head of the Ministry of Justice regarding the restriction of rights in the colony and problems with medical assistance. According to him, after being transferred to IU-6, he remains in "quarantine" and has no opportunity to communicate with his family via video link.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", on March 26, it became known that the health condition of the convicted Nazim Beydemirli had worsened. He was hospitalized in the prison hospital. His wife stated that her husband had not received effective medical assistance in the pre-trial detention center.
In September 2024, economist and former parliament deputy Nazim Beydemirli was sentenced to eight years in prison for extortion. He rejected the charges, the sentence was appealed, but the appellate and cassation instances upheld it. In May 2025, a group of scholars and experts asked the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to pardon Beydemirli.
The imprisoned former deputy of the Azerbaijani parliament and entrepreneur Nazim Beydemirli reported restrictions on his rights and the failure to provide him with effective medical assistance.
In particular, in an open appeal to Minister of Justice Farid Akhmedov, he points out that after being transferred from IU-13 to IU-6, he is still in the so-called "quarantine" and deprived of the opportunity for video communication with family members.
In the appeal, conveyed to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" by the ex-deputy's wife Farida Beydemirli, health problems are also mentioned.
"To address serious health issues, I urgently need to undergo tests and receive treatment. But such conditions are not provided for me. Moreover, I suffer from severe tooth pain, as the lifespan of my dental implant has expired, and it causes severe pain. Both my wife and I have repeatedly appealed to the leadership of the Penitentiary Service and the main medical department of the Ministry of Justice for necessary measures, but in vain," writes the former deputy.
He believes that the refusal of treatment is tantamount to a slow death.
The ex-deputy's wife is concerned for his health and life.
"Before his arrest, Nazim did not suffer from any diseases. But during three years in detention, his health has been seriously undermined. At the end of March, he became so ill that an ambulance was called to the colony, and at the insistence of doctors, he was transferred to the prison hospital. There, he was diagnosed with pneumonia affecting 20 percent of his lungs, acute changes in the cardiovascular system, and elevated blood sugar levels. A patient with such serious illnesses, even if he is a convict, should receive full treatment in normal clinical conditions, in a well-equipped hospital... Without waiting for full recovery, he was returned from the hospital to the colony. Moreover, due to provocations from other inmates, the elderly man, a scholar, and a doctor of economic sciences was placed in a punishment cell. Then Nazim was transferred to another colony with even worse conditions. He is still kept in "quarantine" and under this pretext, his movement and video communication with family members are restricted," said Farida Beydemirli.
The so-called "quarantine" system is used to suppress the will of prisoners in penitentiary institutions, explained a Baku lawyer to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot". "Formally, a newly arrived inmate is kept in isolation from other convicts for two weeks, supposedly to prepare for life in the colony, explaining the rules of behavior in the institution. In reality, however, during "quarantine," the will of the prisoner is broken, and he is made to understand that he has no rights here and must unconditionally obey the orders of the colony management and guards. Sometimes "quarantine" can last for months," he said on condition of anonymity.
It was not possible to obtain comments from the Penitentiary Service and the Ministry of Justice.
It should be noted that Beydemirli was arrested in July 2023. The defense called his case revenge for supporting the residents of the village of Soyudlu, who protested in 2023 against the construction of an artificial reservoir for the discharge of waste from gold mining at the "Gyadabay" field. Details of their protest are provided in the "Caucasian Knot" reference "Protests in Soyudlu: people against the mine".
The Union "For the Freedom of Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan" recognized Beydemirli as a political prisoner. The list of political prisoners also includes a resident of the village of Soyudlu, Joshgun Musaev. He was sentenced to three years in prison for drug-related charges, but according to human rights defenders, the real reason for his arrest was the production of posters used during the protests of the residents of Soyudlu.
