Alesker Mammadli's relatives are concerned about the results of his examination in the pre-trial detention center.
Ultrasound examination revealed changes in the health status of the founder of Toplum TV and media expert Alesker Mammadli, but his results are insufficient for a full assessment, his relatives stated. The family insists on additional diagnostics involving specialized specialists.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", the founder of Toplum TV Alesker Mammadli suffered a heart attack in the pre-trial detention center, and his overall condition has significantly worsened. On August 11, blood samples were taken from Alesker Mammadli for analysis, and an echocardiogram of the heart was performed. The defense and relatives insist on his urgent hospitalization in a specialized clinic. By August 31, Mammadli's blood test results were provided, where "there are significant deviations from the norm in a number of indicators," his wife reported.
Toplum TV positioned itself as an independent platform for expressing different opinions on socio-political and socio-economic events. On February 10, Toplum TV announced the suspension of its activities in Azerbaijan.
An ultrasound examination (US) was conducted for the founder of Toplum TV and media expert Alesker Mammadli in the pre-trial detention center, and its results heightened his relatives' concerns for the health of the convicted. "Finally, my brother had an ultrasound. We were given the results, and the data received only increased our anxiety for Alesker's health," said his brother Nasimi Mammadli to the correspondent of "Caucasian Knot".
According to him, two nodular formations measuring 19×8 mm and 3×2 mm were found in Mammadli's thyroid gland. "A hardened area was found in the left lobe of the prostate. Additionally, the ultrasound revealed changes in the duodenum, which are noted in the conclusion as 'intestinal stones'," said the brother of the convict.
Alesker Mammadli's relatives have serious questions regarding how objectively the results of the ultrasound conducted in the isolation facility reflect the health status of the media expert.
"Even before the arrest, a nodule about 23 millimeters in size was found during the examination of my brother's thyroid gland. During his detention, ultrasound was performed three times, however, the sizes of the nodule in different reports varied significantly. The fact that the sizes of the same nodule are indicated so differently in examinations raises additional questions. Of course, there can be certain discrepancies in measurements, but such significant differences require explanation and comparison with the results of previous studies," noted Nasimi Mammadli.
Citing the opinions of trusted doctors, he noted that "to objectively assess the condition of the thyroid gland, it is not enough to determine only the size of the identified nodule."
"A comprehensive assessment by a specialized endocrinologist is necessary, taking into account the structure and other characteristics of the nodular formation, as well as appropriate laboratory tests, and if necessary, additional instrumental studies," said Mammadli.
Relatives are also concerned about the identified hardened area in the prostate. "To assess the pathology, a consultation with a urologist, appropriate laboratory tests, and, if necessary, more precise diagnostic methods are required," noted Nasimi Mammadli.
The identified changes in the gastrointestinal tract also cannot be fully assessed solely based on ultrasound data, he added. "The most alarming thing is that my brother still has serious complaints about his health. In such a situation, a limited ultrasound conducted in the conditions of a pre-trial detention center is insufficient for a comprehensive assessment of his condition," emphasized Mammadli.
The family of Alesker Mammadli insists on involving specialized specialists and comprehensive examination, and in case of medical indications, on diagnostics and treatment in a private medical institution.
"We are seriously concerned about the real risks to my brother's health. A responsible attitude towards his health and ensuring necessary medical assistance is one of the important duties of the state," summarized Nasimi Mammadli.
The law provides for ensuring prisoners with necessary medical services, noted a Baku lawyer, commenting to the correspondent of "Caucasian Knot" on the information about health problems of Alesker Mammadli.
"If there are no appropriate conditions and equipment in the pre-trial detention center and the medical institution of the Penitentiary Service, then the sick person should be provided with the opportunity to be examined in a specialized state clinic. At the request, the patient can also be examined and treated in a private clinic, but in this case, the expenses must be covered by him or his family members. In any case, the Penitentiary Service is obliged to ensure access to quality medical care," said the expert, who wished to remain unnamed.
Alesker Mammadli's lawyer Fakhraddin Mekhtiev informed the correspondent of "Caucasian Knot" that the date for the preliminary hearings in the appellate court regarding the Toplum TV case has not yet been determined. The Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan could not provide comments to "Caucasian Knot".
