Unsanitary conditions at the market in Makhachkala prompted criticism of officials.

One of the residents of Makhachkala filmed cockroaches on the counters of the local market and published the video on social media. Other residents of Makhachkala, commenting on this video, criticized the market administration and regulatory authorities for the lack of proper sanitary control.

Resident of Makhachkala filmed unsanitary conditions at the Second Market, the video was published on September 5 by the Instagram*-public tut.dagestan. The footage shows counters at the market where cockroaches are running around. According to the resident of Makhachkala, upon seeing the insects, she refused to buy meat.

This post in the Instagram*-public tut.dagestan, which has about 1.6 million followers, had received 1881 likes and 558 comments as of 09:10 Moscow time on September 9.

Other market visitors confirmed that they had also encountered unsanitary conditions there. "It's really terrible there, I am a witness, I saw this picture personally: they lifted a box from the refrigerator, and a whole bunch of cockroaches ran across their freezer, and chickens were lying on the counter," wrote murtazalieva_2930.

"While I was scrolling through the meat, cockroaches were running on my legs," stated anjelagaidarova.

"Because no one cleans properly there at all. The whole market is dirty, you walk in – cockroaches and rats are running around. The floor is so dirty and slippery that it's scary to walk. Can't anyone properly monitor cleanliness and sanitation?" asked user julias_1200.

Commentators criticized the market administration and sanitary services for what they believe is a lack of proper control. "And where is the sanitary epidemiological station? Who controls, who is responsible, where are you?" asked svetlana.gadjieva.

"Why is the market administration inactive? They take the rent money for themselves. Who will take care of cleaning the area?" wrote user ssssssdv.

"Does Rospotrebnadzor not work at all in Dagestan?" asked bairanbekova_im.

Users also doubted the effectiveness of sanitary days held at the market. "Honestly, I don't understand why the Second Market is closed every Monday, for what? The sanitary day should be real, treating all workspaces and floors with bleach, disinfectant, whatever," noted user vodolei_p.

"At least once they should wash and tidy up this market. Every Monday they have a sanitary day. And what? It remained as dirty as it was," stated anisa____86___.

As of 09:10 Moscow time on September 9, there were no comments on the website of the Rospotrebnadzor management in Dagestan regarding residents' complaints about unsanitary conditions at the Second Market in Makhachkala.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that the sanitary condition of markets in Makhachkala had previously raised complaints from local residents. For instance, in June 2014, specialists from the State Veterinary Service and Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance assessed the sanitary condition of the area around the Second Market as unsatisfactory, after which the market was closed twice for disinfection. In October 2015, the authorities of Makhachkala explained plans to move city markets outside the city limits, including due to unsanitary conditions and spontaneous organization of trading areas.
