Kabardino-Balkaria is one of the main centers of mountain tourism and climbing in Russia. The jewel of the republic is the legendary Elbrus – the highest peak in Europe, at the foot of which are the ski resorts "Elbrus" and "Cheget." The picturesque Chegem Gorge with its famous waterfalls is popular among travelers, as well as the high-altitude area of Jily-Su, known for its healing narzan springs. History and ethnotourism enthusiasts visit the archaeological complex "Upper Balkaria" with medieval watchtowers and the "City of the Dead" in the village of Eltyuby. The karst Blue Lakes and the Bezingi Gorge, where most of the Caucasian five-thousanders are concentrated, are also considered natural landmarks of the republic.
