As reported by "Caucasian Knot", the cassation appeal against the sentence of researcher Bakhruz Samedov was left ungranted by the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan. The political scientist's defense intends to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
29-year-old political scientist and doctoral student at Charles University in Prague Bakhruz Samedov was sentenced by a court in Baku to 15 years in prison on charges of treason. The appellate court upheld the sentence. Samedov was detained on August 21, 2024, when he arrived in Azerbaijan for vacation. According to the investigation, he wrote and translated articles at the request of representatives of Armenia. The charges were based on Bakhruz Samedov's correspondence with three women from Armenia. Samedov categorically denied the charge of treason. He is known for his criticism of the Azerbaijani authorities, which he expressed in foreign publications. The defense believes that the reason for his arrest was his "anti-war views".
Researcher Bakhruz Samedov, through his friend and like-minded person Amrakh Takhmazov, sent a message to the media and the public, in which he complained about the conditions of detention in the covered part of the Umbak Prison Complex and the lack of medical assistance. "I am held in a cell with six people. How can one person live in such a cramped cell for a year? The goal is to destroy me both psychologically and physically," Samedov's communication states.
Amrakh Takhmazov pointed out Samedov's vision problems. "Because Bakhruz is held in a small cell, he is deprived of the opportunity to look into the distance. An ophthalmologist examined him, who also recognized the negative impact on Bakhruz's vision from being in such conditions. However, the doctor did not prescribe any treatment, only drops," Amrakhov reported.
According to him, Samedov was also examined by a dermatologist due to eczema, which worsened in detention due to a lack of sunlight exposure. "And this doctor did not prescribe any treatment. When Bakhruz said that he was already in despair from the unjust arrest, poor conditions of detention, and lack of treatment," continued Samedov's friend.
Lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova confirmed the information about the lack of effective medical assistance provided to Samedov.
