Former senator from Karachay-Cherkessia Rauf Arashukov, serving a life sentence, sent a letter to the State Duma and the government of Russia proposing to increase the number of visits with children for those sentenced to life imprisonment.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in 2022, the Moscow City Court sentenced Rauf Arashukov and his father Raul Arashukov to life imprisonment. The appellate and cassation courts upheld the sentence. Raul Arashukov died in prison in 2023.
Former senator Rauf Arashukov sent an appeal to the State Duma and the government of Russia, proposing to amend the legislation and increase the number of visits with minor children whose parents are sentenced to life imprisonment, TASS reported on August 10, citing Arashukov's lawyer Dmitry Trubnikov.
Currently, according to the lawyer, those sentenced to life imprisonment have the right to one long visit with children per year and two short visits, with communication occurring through glass. Arashukov proposed to provide four additional long visits and three additional short meetings with close relatives, as well as to organize regular phone communication with children.
Arashukov noted that "children should not become hostages of the punishment imposed on their parents," and a child "should not be deprived of the opportunity to maintain a normal connection with their father or mother." He also emphasized that his initiative is aimed solely at protecting children's rights.
In the letter, the former senator reminded that he is the father of two minor children, communication with whom is extremely limited, and during rare visits, the children have to undergo emotional adaptation to meet him.
In the spring of 2026, relatives of the life-sentenced Rauf Arashukov received a refusal for his transfer from the Orenburg region to a colony in Mordovia. The former senator's defense promised to appeal this decision. Arashukov also demanded 100,000 rubles in compensation from the colony for the non-issuance of products, but the court at the end of April refused to satisfy this claim. It was revealed at the hearing that the goods that were not issued were absent from the store.
On August 1, Rauf Arashukov declared a hunger strike, citing unbearable working conditions. According to his lawyer, Arashukov refused to eat and is only drinking water. On August 5, the cassation court upheld the ten-year sentence and fine against Arashukov in the bribery case.
Arashukov has unsuccessfully attempted several times to obtain a contract with the Ministry of Defense to be sent to the military operation zone. His lawyer linked the refusals to the fact that Arashukov is sentenced to life imprisonment.
