The Baku Appeal Court has begun reviewing the appeal of Anar Asadli, the chairman of the dissolved party "Elevation," who was found guilty of fraudulent appropriation of funds in May and sentenced to 4.5 years in prison.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in April 2023, the chairman of the "Elevation" party, Anar Asadli, was detained and accused of fraud. An investigation was initiated based on complaints from two individuals who reported to the police that Asadli had fraudulently appropriated their money amounting to $150,000 and $10,000. Asadli claims that he has no debts to the victims. In May, the court sentenced Asadli to 4.5 years in prison, finding him guilty of fraudulent appropriation of funds from four individuals.
In Asadli's case, "there is no crime" and the defense intends to "seek full acquittal" for the politician, said lawyer Hikmet Aliyev to "Caucasian Knot" in July 2023.
On August 4, the first hearing on the appeal against the sentence regarding Anar Asadli, the chairman of the dissolved party "Elevation," took place in the Baku Appeal Court, reports Oxu.az.
During the hearing, personal data was clarified, and then the defendant's lawyer, supporting the appeal, stated that Asadli had borrowed money, which was confirmed by three of the recognized victims in their testimonies. The politician himself also stated that the money was borrowed and there was no intention to commit fraud.
The prosecutor, in turn, stated that he believes there are no grounds for satisfying the appeal. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 8.
