The CEC of South Ossetia registered representatives of four presidential candidates.
The Central Election Commission of South Ossetia reviewed the documents of initiative groups and political parties that nominated candidates for the position of president of the republic, registering authorized representatives of four candidates.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", seven candidates are vying for the presidency of South Ossetia, and the CEC will decide on the registration or refusal of registration of authorized representatives of political parties and initiative groups. Five out of seven candidates are former and current security officials.
After a meeting with Vladimir Putin on June 22, Alan Gagloev was appointed his advisor and announced his resignation as president of South Ossetia. The head of the republic's government, Marat Kambolov, was appointed as the acting president of South Ossetia. Early presidential elections in South Ossetia are scheduled for September 18. During Gagloev's presidency, the degradation of political and social institutions continued in South Ossetia, and the outflow of the population from the republic reached such proportions that a new presidential candidate was sent from outside, analysts interviewed by "Caucasian Knot" stated.
The registration was approved for authorized representatives of Khocha Chochiev, nominated by the "Iry Farn" party, Zurab Kokoiev from the "Unity" party, and Murat Valiev from the "Patriots of Alania". The commission found that the submitted documents met the legal requirements and that the procedures for holding congresses were conducted without violations, TASS reports, citing CEC member Igor Chochiev.
The CEC also registered an initiative group of voters and authorized representatives of Kazbek Kodoeyev. The commission's working group unanimously recommended bringing the issue for consideration, noting the compliance of the submitted documents with the established requirements.
At the same time, the commission refused to register the initiative group for the nomination of Eduard Gabaraev. During the verification, violations in the documentation were identified: the absence of candidate data in the protocols and petition, discrepancies in the information about the members of the initiative group, and the absence of part of the passport data and signatures, which resulted in the actual number of group members being 84 instead of the required number, the state information agency "Res" reports.
Authorized representatives of the only woman among the candidates – Fatima Khugaeva, nominated by the "Party of Development" – also received a refusal in registration. The CEC noted violations during the party congress: at the time of its opening, the number of delegates did not meet the legal requirements. Additionally, shortcomings were identified in the submitted package of documents.
At the congress of the "Party of Development" on July 29, 76 out of 78 present delegates voted for Khugaeva in favor. At the same time, according to the legislation, at least one hundred delegates must be present at the party congress. Despite this, the party noted at that time that they would still send the documents to the CEC.
Recall that according to the Constitution of South Ossetia, after the official departure of the current president, the next elections for the leader of the republic must take place within three months – no later than September 21, 2026.
"The presidential elections of the Republic of South Ossetia must take place no later than 90 days from the day of the early termination of the powers of the former head of state," the text of the Constitution of South Ossetia, posted on the website of the republican parliament, states.
