The defense reported a deterioration in the health of the imprisoned Azerbaijani opposition figure Aliyev.
The health condition of the imprisoned member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Elhan Aliyev, has sharply deteriorated. According to representatives of the PNFAP and his lawyer, Aliyev needs urgent examination for a possible operation.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", earlier a court in Baku sentenced Elhan Aliyev to five years in prison, finding him guilty of fraud in the sale of a land plot. Two other defendants were sentenced to probation, and none of the accused admitted guilt. On May 27, 2024, the appellate court upheld the activist's sentence. It should be noted that in 2024, Aliyev declared a dry hunger strike in the pre-trial detention center.
Elhan Aliyev was detained and arrested in July 2023 on charges of fraud, illegal document production, and intentional use of false documents. Along with Aliyev, two other individuals were detained: Yusif Aliyev and Vafadar Akhundov. All three were suspected of selling a land plot in the Nardaran settlement using forged documents. The case was initiated based on a complaint from the buyer of the plot, Ramo Shukurov. Aliyev declared his innocence and the political nature of the prosecution.

"He has a serious cardiovascular disease. Doctors consider it necessary to install a stent or several stents in the arterial vessels supplying blood to the heart," said a party representative.
According to him, Aliyev's illness has worsened recently. "Elhan Aliyev has intensified heart pains, he complains of frequent shortness of breath. He needs urgent hospitalization, angiography to check the condition of all arterial vessels in the heart area, and surgery to install stents," said the PNFAP representative.
"Elhan Aliyev has three minor children. His daughter is also seriously ill and needs expensive treatment, but the family cannot afford it. Elhan is very worried that he cannot help his child," the opposition figure further noted.
Lawyer Nemat Kerimli confirmed in a conversation with a correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" that Aliyev suffers from cardiovascular disease. "He had a stroke while still free. After his arrest, his condition worsened. The hunger strikes he conducted against unlawful criminal prosecution negatively affected his health. Unfortunately, the appellate and cassation instances did not take our requests to mitigate the sentences and replace the actual term with a conditional one, at least for humanitarian reasons, into account," said the lawyer.
