Shooting at a wedding in Khasavyurt has drawn criticism from social media users.
An 86-year-old resident of Khasavyurt fired a gun into the air at her grandson's wedding. Residents of Dagestan, commenting on a video of this scene on social media, deemed the use of a weapon inappropriate.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", scientist Magomedkhan Magomedkhanov from the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of the Dagestan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences previously noted that shooting at Caucasian weddings is a common occurrence; however, this custom is not historical.
The video, in which an elderly resident of Khasavyurt shoots a gun at a wedding, was published on July 11 by the Instagram*-public dagestan__seichas.
The footage shows an elderly woman on the porch of a building, holding a gun in her hands, then raising it and firing. A young man assists her, supporting the woman's hand holding the gun, and after she fired, he took the weapon from her.
"According to relatives, about 30 years ago she promised her grandson that she would fire a gun at his wedding. Years later, the 86-year-old grandmother kept her word," the video description states.
This post in the Instagram*-public dagestan__seichas, which has about 93.4 thousand followers, had garnered 614 likes and 31 comments by 13:36 MSK on July 12. Some of the authors deemed the shooting at the wedding inappropriate.
"Horrible," wrote user __ilmy__. "Well, yes, heroism," believes meseda4945.
"Grandmas are not what they used to be. She should have given a slap and said that it's dangerous to do this among people," noted rozka845.
"Well, why do this?" asked user a.z.a.2209.
"How ugly," noted khadizhat6654. "She lived to see a gun," emphasized suleimanova5123.
Other users sided with the elderly woman.
"So many negative comments. Where does all this anger come from? Unlike most people, even if she said it as a joke or seriously back then, she kept her word. The negative comments people write, if we start with ourselves, we will never reach her. You have already shown here how not to do it. What else do you want to show, how smart people act?" asked user tentation_ephemere.
It should be noted that, according to experts interviewed by "Caucasian Knot", the ancient ritual of shooting at a Caucasian wedding, which was once considered a "protection against the evil eye", has long become an element of fun and revelry. Shooting at weddings may soon completely disappear from the cities of the republic, as recently this tradition in Dagestan is being recalled less and less, local media editors previously noted.
