Satellite monitoring has recorded a leak from the sunken tanker near Anapa.
A leak of oil products has resumed from the sunken bow section of the tanker "Volgoneft-239" in the Kerch Strait, as evidenced by satellite images. The leak may be related to the increase in water temperature and the work on pumping out fuel oil from the tankers.
As reported by "Caucasian Knot", authorities have reported the opening of 75 beaches in Anapa, with another 11 undergoing inspections. Against the backdrop of reports about the opening of beaches, there is a silence about the work on pumping out fuel oil from the sunken tankers, users pointed out on July 6. The operational headquarters of Kuban and the government commission for eliminating the consequences of the emergency situation do not provide information on the progress of the work on pumping out fuel oil.
The resort season in Anapa has opened against a sharp contrast in the state of the coastline. Some beaches are open and deemed safe, while other areas are closed due to erosion, unstable ground, and environmental risks. A report by "Caucasian Knot" details which beaches are ready for visitors and which pose dangers in "Beaches of Anapa: open and dangerous zones".
Satellite imagery has recorded the resumption of the leak of oil products from the sunken bow section of the tanker "Volgoneft-239" in the Kerch Strait, reported today by the Sky Eye project based on data from the radar satellite image Sentinel-1 from July 6, 2026, and optical images from Sentinel-2 and Planet from July 1, 2026.
The leak may be related to the increase in water temperature in the Black Sea, heating of the fuel oil, and migration of light fractions through the leaks in the connections, as well as the ongoing work on pumping out oil products from the tankers, the report notes.
On December 15, 2024, two tankers carrying fuel oil sank in the Kerch Strait. As a result, a crew member of one of the tankers died. Additionally, there was a spill of oil products, leading to catastrophic environmental consequences, as stated in the report by "Caucasian Knot" "Fuel oil spill in the Kerch Strait".
Materials on the consequences of the fuel oil spill have been collected by "Caucasian Knot" on the page "Ecological disaster in Kuban".
