More than 60 residents of Karachay-Cherkessia have been arrested in an extremism case.

The court chose a measure of restraint for two months.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", the city court of Cherkessk issued a guilty verdict against nine residents of Karachay-Cherkessia, finding them guilty of organizing the activities of an extremist community and participating in it. The convicted were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment - from 6 years in a general regime colony to 3 years of conditional imprisonment.

The court arrested several dozen members of an international religious extremist organization banned in Russia in the territory of Karachay-Cherkessia.

"As a result of a series of operational-search activities, more than 60 participants of an underground cell of the international religious extremist organization banned in Russia, who denied secular laws and civil society institutions, were detained," - quotes Interfax a message from the FSB of the republic, which did not specify to which organization the detainees belonged.

"By the court's decision, a measure of restraint in the form of detention for a period of two months was chosen for the detainees," - the press service reported today.

At the residences of the detainees, extremist literature and materials confirming participation in the banned organization were found, TASS clarified, citing security officials.

It should be noted that a criminal case has been initiated under parts 1, 2 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (organization of the activities of an extremist organization and participation in it).

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that the Supreme Court of Karachay-Cherkessia mitigated the sentence in the case of the extremist community, issued in July 2025 by the Cherkessk city court, however, the guilty verdict was not completely overturned.

In October 2025, the court in Karachay-Cherkessia announced the verdict for six residents of the republic who were accused of involvement in "At-Takfir wal-Hijra"*. A day after the verdict, the court's press service reported that they were convicted as participants of AUE*.
