Doctors called for support for convicted Giorgi Chakhunashvili.
The Association of Georgian Clinics called on doctors from all hospitals and clinics across the country to rally in support of Academician Giorgi Chakhunashvili, who was convicted of attempting to storm the presidential residence.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on June 19, on the 569th day of continuous protests, doctors staged a rally outside the Georgian parliament, condemning the harsh sentence imposed on pediatrician and professor Giorgi Chakhunashvili. Along with Chakhunashvili, five other people were sentenced to lengthy prison terms in connection with the storming of the presidential administration building on October 4.
Earlier, the prosecutor's office released video footage of Chakhunashvili standing in the courtyard of the presidential residence, calling out to someone from the street. He leaves soon after. No violence is visible on the footage. Chakhunashvili himself stated that he was at the protest site as a doctor.
In support of the arrested doctor, Giorgi Chakhunashvili, a nationwide rally, "Solidarity in White Coats," has been announced for June 22 at 11:00 a.m. (10:00 a.m. Moscow time).
The head of the Association of Clinics, Vili Pachkoria, called on all clinics and outpatient clinics operating in Georgia to don white coats in support of Giorgi Chakhunashvili. "The Association of Clinics of Georgia is outraged by what has happened, since such an outstanding, experienced, and respected doctor, pediatrician, cardiologist, and academician, Giorgi Chakhunashvili, has been arrested. The Association of Georgian Clinics calls on all clinics and outpatient clinics operating in Georgia to hold a five-minute solidarity council of workers in white coats tomorrow morning as a sign of solidarity. "Let us all stand together in white coats outside clinics with one call: freedom and solidarity with Giorgi Chakhunashvili," InterPressNews quotes him as saying.
The Presidium of the Georgian Academy of Humanities and Arts expressed deep concern over the sentence handed down to the Academy's president, Professor Giorgi Chakhunashvili. The statement emphasized that Giorgi Chakhunashvili is a renowned pediatrician, professor, academician, scientist, and public figure who has served Georgia for decades, contributing to the development of medicine, science, and education.
"His professional biography, public activities, and personal authority are well known to the public." "He has always been an example of dedication to medicine, civic responsibility, and humanism," reads the statement, quoted by Georgia Online.
Protesters in Georgia have been demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of political prisoners since November 28, 2024. Security forces have violently dispersed the protests, using tear gas and water cannons, and detained protesters. Thousands of people have been subjected to administrative prosecution during the protests.
