After the judge presiding over the case of Kurban Dalgatov, who died in police custody, was terminated, the case was transferred to another judge, but the trial never resumed.
As "Caucasian Knot" reported, three years after the death of Kurban Dalgatov, most of the defendants were never sentenced, with five of them sent to the SVO. Dalgatov's relatives were outraged by the lengthy investigation, despite officials' statements that the perpetrators would be punished. Three defendants were questioned on March 15; they deny guilt. On April 10, the Qualification Collegium of Judges of Dagestan approved the resignation of Judge Patimat Makhatilova, who legalized the unauthorized extension to a high-rise building that collapsed during the flood. Makhatilova is known for her handling of the Dalgatov murder case. Due to the termination of her mandate, the case will be reopened.
On January 20, 2023, before the arrest of 35-year-old Kurban Dalgatov, a conflict between two men occurred on the street. One of them, according to police, shot his opponent and escaped with Dalgatov's help. Kurban Dalgatov was found and detained. His condition worsened at the police station. He was given first aid and taken to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead. His family stated that Dalgatov died of asphyxiation, which occurred after he was "electrically shocked in the heart." The man sustained injuries before his death, the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed.
After a change of judge in the murder trial of children's wrestling coach Kurban Dalgatov, the court hearings have not yet begun, a source close to the lawyer representing Dalgatov's family and his injured friends told a Caucasian Knot correspondent on June 16.
"The case has already been assigned to a different judge, but the trial has not resumed. This is an atypical situation for a trial. Perhaps the reason is the large volume of documents, which the judge simply hasn't had time to read yet," he noted.
Dalgatov's mother, Raisa Dalgatova, confirmed his words. According to her, the trial could begin in a month. "I was already thinking of contacting the new head of the republic and understanding what's going on, why everything is moving so slowly, and why those who had already been sentenced received short sentences," she said.
According to Dalgatova, the families of the defendants have not attempted to contact her during this time.
In July 2024, the investigation into the case of 11 officers of the Sovietsky District Police Department in Makhachkala accused in Dalgatov's death was completed. The criminal cases of two other police officers who entered into plea bargains with investigators—Islam Atavov and Marat Babayev—were separated into separate proceedings. Neither defendant pleaded guilty. In November 2024, the court granted Marat Babayev's request to release him to the military operation zone in Ukraine. Imran Rustamov and Adis Isakov made similar requests. In March, the Supreme Court of Dagestan rejected the appeal regarding Imran Rustamov's transfer to the SVO zone.
