A Novorossiysk resident was sentenced to a long prison term for treason.

The Krasnodar Regional Court found a Novorossiysk resident guilty of treason and sentenced him to 18 years in a maximum security prison.

According to the court, the defendant was an opponent of the Russian government and the ongoing special military operation. In May 2023, he joined an open chat on a messaging app to assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The defendant shared information he obtained during his military service in Novorossiysk. He posted photographs and information in the chat that were valuable to Ukrainian intelligence agencies in their activities directed against Russian security, the joint press service of the Krasnodar Regional Courts reported today on Telegram.

The defendant was found guilty of treason. "The court sentenced the perpetrator to 18 years' imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony, with a suspended sentence of 1 year and 6 months. He is also banned from using the internet for 2 years and 6 months. The sentence has not yet entered into force," the court said in a statement.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that the Southern District Military Court will hear the case of a young resident of Novorossiysk, accused of sabotage and treason.
