The appellate court upheld the sentence of Bataysk resident Araz Huseynov, who was sentenced to 10 years for attacking a Wagner PMC fighter in 2023.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in September 2023, a Wagner PMC fighter was beaten in Bataysk and then shot with a non-lethal weapon. On March 4, the court found Araz Guseinov guilty of assault and sentenced him to 10 years in a maximum-security penal colony.

The Rostov Regional Court heard an appeal of Araz Guseinov's sentence, Kommersant reported on June 1.

Guseinov only partially admitted guilt and requested a mitigated sentence, arguing that the victim provoked the conflict, and that he defended himself and fired in a manner that did not cause fatal injuries. The verdict was appealed by both the defense and the prosecution. The prosecutor, in particular, pointed out a number of errors in the first-instance decision, but did not request a change in the sentence.

The defense, for its part, requested an acquittal, a mitigation of the sentence, or a remand of the case for retrial. One of the lawyers also stated in the complaint that the victim and his girlfriend themselves provoked the conflict by insulting Huseynov on ethnic grounds. It was also stated that about ten people were involved in the conflict, but only Huseynov turned himself in, compensated the material damages and partially compensated the victim for moral harm, and officially apologized to him and his mother several times.

The court, however, upheld the decision regarding the sentence imposed.
