An acting mayor of Nalchik has been appointed.

Azamatgeriy Ashkhotov, the head and government affairs manager of Kabardino-Balkaria, has become acting mayor of Nalchik following the sudden death of Taimuraz Akhokhov.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," Nalchik Mayor Taimuraz Akhokhov was found dead on May 24. Investigators are investigating the circumstances of his death. Akhokhov had led the Nalchik administration since April 2018, prior to which he served as first deputy chairman of the government of Kabardino-Balkaria.

Nalchik City Council deputies today elected Azamatgeriy Ashkhotov, who previously served as the head and government affairs manager of the republic, as acting head of the city administration.

Ashkhotov was born in Nalchik. He graduated from Kabardino-Balkarian State University in 2003 with a degree in accounting, analysis, and audit, and from the North Caucasus Academy of Public Administration with a degree in jurisprudence in 2008, according to the Nalchik administration's official Telegram channel.

Azamatgeriy Ashkhotov has held the post of Chief of Staff of the Head and Government of Kabardino-Balkaria since November 2019. In previous years, he worked in customs agencies, commercial entities, and the republic's judicial system.
