According to local residents, the flooding in Chechnya has had virtually no effect; new homes are being built to replace those destroyed. They also reported that they are awaiting compensation for damaged property.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," authorities report that 3,235 homes and 92 socially significant facilities in Chechnya have been damaged by the flooding. More than 500 road sections, 55 bridges, and eight hydraulic structures have been damaged. Earlier, authorities recognized at least 127 families affected by the flood as needing new housing.
By April 27, Chechen authorities had received more than 29,000 applications for flood damage compensation from residents of the republic.
On May 5, Chechen residents told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about the ongoing consequences of the April flooding in the republic.
About 150 houses are almost ready for people who have completely lost their homes, said Yunus, a resident of the Kurchaloyevsky district. "The grand opening and occupancy are planned for May 9. They've called in all the employees from all the districts, as if for cleanup days, to start sprucing things up. "That is, it's already 100 percent ready, right there with the furniture. Even the residents themselves are already arriving and already know who will be living where. They're also helping out in some way, working," he said.
According to Yunus, there are practically no traces of the flood left. "The water has receded everywhere. They're repairing the roads, fixing them, cleaning them," he noted.
Ilyas, a resident of one of the villages in the Shatoi District, whose house wall was destroyed, said he's still waiting for payments. "There are no longer any consequences from the flood. We're expecting payments, but we have no idea how much it will be," he said.
Abdulla, from the Gudermes District, is also waiting for payments for a partially damaged house. "There was even a commission in our village, which didn't suffer such damage; some houses were only slightly washed away or had cracks. But there was a compensation commission, and they compiled lists. No cash payments have been received yet. We also don't know the amounts," he said.
Meanwhile, new homes are indeed being built quickly for residents of villages where houses were completely destroyed, Abdullah pointed out. "They're building intensively and very quickly; in theory, the foundations should dry out a bit, but maybe they have a special technology. Basically, they're building very quickly there. Otherwise, there are no problems. There are no problems with electricity, gas, or water now," he noted.
