Tuapse residents considered the city unsafe to stay in
The smell of burning after the third fire in April caused by a drone strike can be felt beyond the borders of Tuapse, local residents said. Some have fled the city, fearing the health risks of combustion products.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot", on April 28, a drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery in Tuapse. Residents were in the area surrounding the refinery, and the governor of Krasnodar Krai announced the evacuation of about 70 people. Today, authorities reported the fire contained.
A regional emergency has been declared throughout the entire Tuapse District . You can read about emergency assessment criteria, response levels, structures, and resources for eliminating the consequences in the "Caucasian Knot" fact sheet "Emergency Situation Regime (ES)".
Stasya is still staying in the city..
"There is water in my area, but there is smoke in the city" smokeis felt at alleeven when you drive up to Tuapse, in the Dzhubga area. The windowsills are black. Closed windows don't help, although we are far from the source of the smoke" - , she told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Water, gas, and other utilities are available in her house.
"I think that those who live closer to the oil refinery have difficulties with this. There were no calls for evacuation until April 28,", - Stasya noted.
Another resident of TuapseEvgenia left on April 28 fromcitybecause she believes the conditions there are dangerous for the children's health.
"My apartment was destroyed after a drone attack on November 25th last year. I moved to another, quieter area, but after the latest attack, I decided to move further away. I have been renting an apartment for 5 months at my own expense. I was not provided with temporary housing. We turned to the authorities for help, but they are deaf," she told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to Evgenia, smoke trails are visible in Olginka, where she is now located, and it is 30 kilometers from Tuapse.
"I also rent an apartment here at my own expense. At the time of the emergency, I did not hear any calls for evacuation. All these calls began when the federal and regional authorities turned their attention to us,” she noted. — she noted..
Igor also left Tuapse on his own initiative.
"Volunteers believe that the entire city should be evacuated, but the authorities are hesitant to do so," he told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
He said that after leaving the city, he saw smoke from Arkhipo-Osipovka (50 km from Tuapse) and Krasnodar (100 km). "The smoke can be felt 50 km northwest of Tuapse," he said.
As a reminder, during the fire at the oil refinery, oil products spilled from a storage tank onto the road, damaging several cars.
The fire caused by the drone strike is the third in Tuapse since April 16
The fire following the drone attack in Tuapse is the third in the past two weeks. On the night of April 20, a drone attack at an oil terminal in the port of Tuapse caused a fire that was extinguished only on April 24. Residents said the city experienced "an oil rain." The fire at the sea terminal is dangerous due to the release of combustion products that are carcinogenic and toxic. Environmentalists emphasized that the "oil rain" reduced the level of harmful substances in the air, but also contaminated the soil. On the night of April 16, a drone attack in Tuapse killed a 14-year-old girl and an adult woman, and injured seven others. Sixty residential buildings and three public facilities were damaged, and five private homes were completely destroyed. A fire also broke out at the seaport; it was extinguished on April 19. Residents of Tuapse reported that after the attack, "the entire sky was covered in smoke," and a burning smell was felt throughout the city throughout the day.
Furthermore, on April 24, after booms broke due to rising water levels in the river An oil spill occurred in Tuapse, spilling into the Black Sea. Authorities declared the spill "local," but the oil spread to nearby villages. Fuel oil has spread over a large area, and it is being cleaned up mainly by volunteers, local residents told the "Caucasian Knot" on April 26.
The oil spill that entered the Black Sea after the drone attack in Tuapse is expanding, and the environmental outlook for the coast is not bright, nor are the prospects for the resort season, scientists noted.
Materials on the consequences of the fuel oil spills in the Kerch Strait and Tuapse have been collected by the "Caucasian Knot" on the page "Eco-disaster in Kuban".
