In the village of Syrkhavand in the Aghdere district, a man was blown up by a mine and lost his left leg.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," security forces, sappers, and local residents are periodically blown up by mines in the former Karabakh conflict zone. From November 2020, when the 44-day war in Karabakh ended, until the end of December 2025, 415 people became victims of mines and unexploded ordnance in Azerbaijan. Of these, 71 were killed and 344 were injured.

On April 26, Vugar Akhmedov, a resident of Yenibina village in the Khojaly district, was struck by an anti-personnel mine in the village of Syrkhavand in the Agdere district. The incident occurred in the unreconciled area of the former contact line, Oxu.az reports.

He sustained a wound to his left leg. He was taken to the Barda Central District Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a traumatic amputation of his left leg at the ankle. His condition is assessed as serious.

As a reminder, military analysts previously interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" noted that demining the territories following the fighting in Karabakh could drag on for years, as it is a long and complex process.

In October 2022, the President of Azerbaijan stated that more than a million mines had been laid in the Karabakh conflict zone, and demining would take 30 years. He estimated the cost at $25 billion. In August 2023, Azerbaijani public organizations appealed to the UN and the European Union to help resolve the problem with mine clearance in the country's territories.

In May 2024, the European Union, which had allocated 10 million euros to Azerbaijan for mine clearance since 2020, agreed to increase its financial assistance to Baku for mine clearance in the former Karabakh conflict zone to 14 million euros.
