A site for the construction of houses to replace those flooded in Mamedkala has been approved.

New standard houses will be built for residents of Zarechnaya, Kandelaki, Aydinbekova, and Vokzalnaya Streets in Mamedkala, whose homes are uninhabitable after the flooding. District authorities have discussed their location with the head of the relevant ministry.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," the number of residential buildings remaining flooded in Dagestan had decreased to 117 by April 18. 537 people remain in temporary accommodation centers. A Mamedkala resident, whose home is uninhabitable after the flooding, told the "Caucasian Knot" that he has already been shown the location where new houses are planned to be built.

About 1.5 million residents of Dagestan are in the zone of devastating floods. As a result of the flood, six residents of the republic died, including three minors. In addition, on April 13, 19-year-old volunteer Artem Mikhrabov, who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury while helping residents of the flooded village of Mamedkala, died in the hospital.

The Derbent District Administration reported today that during a meeting between the head of the district and the Minister of Land and Property Relations of Dagestan, Zaur Eminov, the issue of changing the land category was discussed, which is planned to "later be included within the boundaries of the municipal formation of the village of Mamedkala."

"After completing the necessary procedures, this land plot will be transferred for the construction of standard residential buildings. The new housing is intended for residents of Zarechnaya, Kandelaki, Aydinbekova, and Vokzalnaya streets, affected by the recent flooding," the report said.

Authorities also reported that the Interdepartmental Commission for the Recognition of Residential The premises are uninhabitable, and she is currently inspecting houses on Zarechnaya Street.

According to the Caucasian Knot weather service, Makhachkala will see partly cloudy skies with no precipitation today. No rain is expected tonight or on April 19th. The weather service is a partnership between the Caucasian Knot and Gismeteo. The service allows you to adjust meteorological data for a more accurate forecast. The service is also available in a light version and in Caucasian Knot apps for Android and AndroidGO.

As a reminder, floods caused by torrential rains have been ongoing in the North Caucasus since the end of March, and have become some of the most destructive in recent years. Dagestan and Chechnya suffered the most from the disaster, according to the "Caucasian Knot" report "Spring flooding in the North Caucasus-2026".

The Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences has linked regular flooding in Dagestan to a combination of natural processes and anthropogenic impacts, which exacerbate the scale of natural disasters. In particular, development on river floodplains, deforestation, and the disregard for water protection zones "literally multiply the consequences" of flooding, which under other conditions could have been relatively calm, noted Doctor of Geographical Sciences Alexey Gunya.

Dagestani analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" also named ill-considered development, natural factors, and the deplorable state of hydraulic structures among the causes of the devastating flooding. At the same time, they unanimously considered the volunteers' contribution to the fight against the consequences of the flood to be significant.

The Caucasian Knot has compiled materials about flooding in the republics of the North Caucasus Federal District in the spring of 2026 on the thematic page "Flooding in the North Caucasus".
