The suspect in the attack on Abkhaz activist Kakalia has been released under house arrest.

A court in Sukhum has placed Alkhas Gurguliya, one of the suspects in the attack on opposition activist Eshsou Kakalia, under house arrest.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on February 22, one of the three suspects in the assassination attempt on Eshsou Kakalia, Alkhas Gurguliya, a member of the Public Chamber of Abkhazia, was detained.

On February 21, Eshsou Kakalia, a member of the Supreme Council of the opposition public organization "Aidgylara," received a gunshot wound and was hospitalized. The victim was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, a concussion, facial fractures, and gunshot wounds to the thigh and shin.

The Sukhumi City Court placed Alkhas Gurguliya, who shot the former Deputy Prosecutor General and deputy chairman of the opposition public organization "Aidgylara," Yeshsou Kakalia, under house arrest until April 21, bringing a different charge. This was stated in a statement published on the court's website on March 25.

The investigation requested an extension of the arrest, but the court chose a more lenient measure, the Aiashara news agency reported on its Telegram channel.

As a reminder, on February 22, the opposition stated that the assassination attempt on Kakalia was prompted by his criticism of the head of the presidential administration, Beslan Eshba. They demanded his resignation, a fair investigation, and announced a meeting. At the meeting on February 23, opposition members accused Beslan Eshba of exacerbating political tensions in Abkhazia and called on him to resign.

Eshsou Kakalia was the head of the coordination headquarters for resolving the political crisis during the period when protesters were seeking the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania.

Then, during the protests, scuffles broke out between security forces and opponents of the investment agreement with Russia. In November 2024, as a result of the protests, President Aslan Bzhania resigned. The "Caucasian Knot" has prepared a report "Early elections of the President of Abkhazia".
