A Kaspiysk rehab volunteer has been convicted of the death of a patient.

A court sentenced a rehab volunteer who tied up and then beat a patient to death to seven years and four months in prison. In court, the man stated that he used force to stop the patient's aggression.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot," on January 20, 2025, the Caspian City Court remanded a rehabilitation center employee detained in connection with the death of a patient into custody. The case was opened under articles on illegal deprivation of liberty (Part 3 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and causing grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of a patient through negligence (Part 4 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), which carry prison sentences of up to eight years and up to 15 years, respectively. In September 2025, the case was filed in court.

According to investigators, a rehab employee, realizing the patient needed medical attention, did not call an ambulance, but "in order to stop aggressive actions," tied up the patient and struck him "on various parts of the body." The man died from his injuries a short time later.

The Caspian City Court issued a verdict in the criminal case against a 34-year-old resident of the Levashinsky District, charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty (Part 1 of Article 127 of the Russian Criminal Code) and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm to a patient at the Amanat rehabilitation center, resulting in death by negligence (Part 4 of Article 111 of the Russian Criminal Code), the United Press Service of the Courts of Dagestan reported today on its Telegram channel.

In court, the defendant admitted his guilt, but explained that he had no direct or indirect intent to cause bodily harm or death to the victim, but used physical force to stop his aggressive actions.

The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to 7 years and 4 months imprisonment in a general regime penal colony. A civil claim for 2 million rubles in compensation for moral damages from the convicted person was also upheld.

The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that in September 2025, a court in Makhachkala remanded in custody four employees of a rehabilitation center accused of illegally depriving addicted patients of liberty and causing the death of one of them.

Private rehabilitation centers are positioned as social institutions and are popular amid Dagestan residents' distrust of doctors at licensed medical institutions. However, lawyers, a human rights activist, and a journalist commented on the death of a rehab patient in Makhachkala, and those rehabilitating risk poor quality services and staff abuse.
