A Georgian citizen has been detained in Abkhazia in connection with an espionage case.
Georgian citizen Emzar Bagishvili has been detained in Abkhazia on suspicion of espionage.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on March 5, the Krasnodar Regional Court sentenced Romanian citizen Adrian-David Kercho to 15 years in prison, accused of espionage on behalf of Ukraine. In December 2024, he was detained by security forces in Abkhazia, and in April 2025, the FSB announced his detention in Sochi.
The Abkhaz Security Service stated that Georgian citizen Emzar Bagishvili, born in 1968, was detained on March 10, and a case was opened against him on March 12. According to the Abkhaz Security Council, Bagishvili is suspected of "collecting and transmitting information concerning the socio-political situation in the republic, as well as military equipment and transport routes," Sova reports.
In a video published on the SSC website, security officials ask Bagishvili where his children live. "Two in Georgia, one in America," he replies. No evidence was presented to support Bagishvili's accusations.
The Georgian State Security Service states that a hotline has been activated in connection with the incident, and details are being established, Interpressnews reports.
