Last year, according to the Volgograd Region Veterinary Committee, there were more than 17,000 stray dogs in the region, while the year before, their number exceeded 19,000.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in early 2024, Volgograd Region authorities reported a decrease in the number of stray dogs in Volgograd and the Sredneakhtubinsky District, where attacks by children did not occur. According to their data, 1,301 ownerless dogs are registered in the Sredneakhtubinsky District, and 9,716 in Volgograd.

On March 9, the Volgograd Region summarized the results of measures to regulate the population of stray animals. The regional Veterinary Committee reported that in 2025, 11 shelters were operating in the region, 10 of which were owned by non-profit organizations and one was municipally owned, according to Vysota 102.

According to the agency, the number of stray dogs has been steadily declining since 2023. For example, as of September 2023, there were 21,086 stray dogs in the region, 19,967 in 2024, and 17,240 in 2025.

48% of dogs underwent the OSVV procedure, meaning they were caught, sterilized, vaccinated, and released. In 2025, 3,179 were sterilized. In Volgograd, the proportion of microchipped dogs is 62%, and in Volzhsky, 82%.

Until 2022, 10 million rubles were allocated annually from the regional budget for measures to regulate the stray animal population, but in 2025, this amount increased to 15 million.

The committee also reported an increase in the number of warnings about the inadmissibility of violating rules for the treatment of stray animals. In 2023, eight of them were issued, and in 2024, 20. In 2025, 42 reports were also drawn up against residents, with fines totaling 150,000 rubles.

The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that in April 2024, in the city of Krasnoslobodsk, a dog bit two boys who were playing on a playground.
