A student from Novocherkassk has been arrested in connection with a terrorist attack.
A Novocherkassk university student suspected of setting two electrical substations on fire has been taken into custody.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in southern Russia, since the start of the military operation in Ukraine, there have been repeated arson attacks on railway and cellular communications equipment. Investigators are classifying these incidents as acts of sabotage and terrorism. Thus, in February, a court sentenced Nikolai Golubov, a resident of the Rostov region, to 11 years in prison for arson on the railroad.
A student at a Novocherkassk university has been detained on suspicion of setting fire to two city electrical substations, the press service of the Federal Security Service (FSB) for the Rostov Region reported.
"For committing the arson, the young man was promised the return of the money he had previously transferred to fraudsters, as well as release from non-existent criminal prosecution for allegedly transferring funds to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Interfax quotes the agency as saying today.
Security officials believe that the young man purchased the tools and fuel needed for the arson, filming his actions on camera.
A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 Under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code, the suspect was remanded in custody, the publication states.
Part 2 of Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code carries a sentence of 15 years to life imprisonment.
