Explosions due to a gas pressure surge occurred in the homes of residents of Derbent.
Explosions, sometimes accompanied by fires, occurred at 35 residential addresses in Derbent. Authorities reported no casualties.
As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on February 25, the Supreme Court of Dagestan toughened the sentence for Eldar Nasrulaev, who was found guilty of improper storage of ammonium nitrate, which exploded near a gas station on the outskirts of Makhachkala in August 2023. He was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison.
In mid-November 2025, Eldar Nasrulaev, a tenant of a warehouse near a gas station in the suburbs of Makhachkala, was sentenced to five years in prison for violations in the storage of ammonium nitrate, which led to an explosion with multiple casualties at a gas station in Makhachkala.
The explosions in the homes of Derbent residents occurred due to a sharp increase in pressure in the gas pipeline. "Today, starting at 4:15 AM, 112 began receiving calls from residents about the smell of gas, explosions, and localized fires in residential buildings on Oskar, 345th DSD, General Seidov, Rasulbekov, Yaragskogo, Ofitserskaya, and Gradostroitelnaya Streets. According to preliminary reports, the cause was a sudden pressure surge in the gas network. Emergency services received calls at 35 addresses (apartments and private homes). Localized fires occurred in several buildings, and windows were broken," the city administration press service said in a statement, as quoted by TASS.
There were no casualties or injuries, officials noted. However, gas supply to these addresses has been temporarily cut off, and emergency work is underway.
"After the explosion, some stoves caught fire, and the shock wave blew out windows in some places. Residents had to extinguish the fire themselves. Previously, people had complained about the smell of gas in their apartments, but specialists hadn't responded to their calls," according to a message on the Mash Gor Telegram channel.
"There's a gas pipe in the room where the child sleeps. When I came in during the day, he was sleeping during nap time, and I smelled a strong gas odor. I grabbed the child from the bed and quickly carried him into the living room," 360.ru quotes an eyewitness whose home is located near the damaged high-rise building.
Emergency services took her call, but the gas worker never showed up. That evening, in a conversation with a gas service representative, she learned that many people were complaining about the smell of gas. "He said something like, 'You know, every apartment smells of gas now,'" the outlet quotes the woman as saying.
According to another Derbent resident, several gas explosions occurred in a neighboring building at approximately 4:00 a.m. Moscow time. According to her, the noise frightened children, and many neighbors went outside.
An inspection of compliance with gas supply laws has been launched following a gas leak in Derbent residents' homes, Interfax quotes a statement from the Dagestan prosecutor's office press service.
