The Court of Appeals granted the defense motion of Archbishop Mikael Ajapayan, Primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and transferred him from prison to house arrest.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in early October the court sentenced Archbishop Mikael Ajapayan, Primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, to two years in prison. In late October, the prosecutor's office appealed the verdict. In late December, he was taken to a clinic for emergency surgery.

On June 27, security forces detained the primate of the Shirak Diocese, Mikael Ajapayan (also referred to in the media as Mikael Ajapakhyan), who voluntarily surrendered to the Investigative Committee. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power, which carries a sentence of two to five years in prison. An attempt to detain an Archbishop of the Armenian Church led to a standoff between security forces and believers.

On February 6, the Court of Appeals transferred Archbishop Mikael Ajapayan, head of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, from prison to house arrest, News.am reports.

The court granted the defense's motion, while imposing restrictions on Ajapayan's visitation, which do not apply to relatives, lawyers, clergy, and administrative employees of the Shirak Diocese.

The defense, in turn, demanded that the sentence be increased from two to two and a half years in prison.

More details on the case of Ajapayan and other political opponents of the current government are provided in the report "Caucasian Knot" "The Main Thing About Political Arrests in Armenia in Summer 2025".
