The Georgian Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against opposition activist Khasai.

The prosecutor's office has charged Gela Hasai, a member of the Coalition for Change and the opposition party "Girchi - More Freedom," with assault. He faces up to six years in prison.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot," security forces in Tbilisi suspect Gela Hasai, an activist from the "Girchi" party, of beating a man. Hasaya was detained several days before the municipal elections, in which Girchi is participating.

Hasaya was initially detained on charges of intentional minor bodily harm. An investigation was launched under Article 120 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated.

"As a result of the investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was established that on September 1 in Tbilisi, in the area adjacent to Queen Tamar Avenue, a group of accused persons intentionally inflicted bodily harm on the victim. Law enforcement officers detained the accused persons on September 29. They were charged under Part 2 of Article 118 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (intentional, less serious bodily harm committed by a group of persons)., which provides for a punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of 4 to 6 years," the Georgian Prosecutor's Office stated.

The opposition leader's lawyer, Omar Purtseladze, said that Khasaya does not know the person who was also arrested in this case. "Gela Hasaya doesn't know the man who was detained. We only learned his name from the case file. As for Gela's position, it's clear and unambiguous: regardless of the charge or sentence, the essence is the same: the charges brought against the opposition figure are political persecution from start to finish and cannot have any other basis," TV Pirveli quoted him as saying.

"For months and years, Hasaya received threats that he would be arrested because of his social, civic, and political activism, and that he would spend a long time in prison. After his detention, Gela was told directly that they had fulfilled their promise and that's why he was arrested under a criminal statute. The exact charge and sentence are irrelevant. But the fact is that the serious charges were not arbitrary: the authorities thus covered their bases and created the impression that a more lenient preventive measure than pretrial detention could not be applied to Hasaya," the lawyer was quoted as saying. According to Purtseladze, the case materials contain no evidence of Khasai's guilt. "We haven't yet had the opportunity to fully review the case materials, but upon a quick review and examination of the list, we saw that there is no neutral evidence, such as camera footage or other sources of information, in the case at this time. The case is based solely on the testimony of these individuals," the lawyer said.
