Yerevan High-Rise Construction Discussion Postponed After Protests

The Yerevan Council of Elders removed from the agenda the discussion of the construction of a multi-story building on the site of a children's playground, against which local residents are protesting.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, residents of the Yerevan Nor Nork district today held a protest in front of the city hall. They called to prevent the demolition of the children's playground and the construction of an 18-story building in its place.

Activist Artur Chakhoyan, who lives in this neighborhood, said that four public discussions were held on the construction issue, and in three of them the authorities gave a negative conclusion, the Council of Elders also refused to issue a building permit. However, according to the activist, on September 9, the Council of Elders meeting agenda, which is not subject to publication, is scheduled to issue a construction permit.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Yerevan Council of Elders removed from the agenda the issue of issuing a preliminary permit for the construction of an apartment building in the Nor Nork administrative district, News.am reports.

The proposal to remove the issue was made by the head of the Republic faction, Ani Khachatryan. She suggested organizing the discussion later.

In turn, the head of the Mother Armenia faction, Manuk Sukiasyan, suggested not removing the issue from the agenda, but making it subject to publication.

A member of the National Progress faction, Iosif Kubatyan, proposed at the meeting to put the issue of a permit for the construction of the building up for discussion in order to find out the opinion of residents, including children, the publication writes.
