The area of the fire at the landfill in Novorossiysk has decreased
The fire at the landfill in Novorossiysk has been localized, its area has been reduced to 800 square meters.
As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on the morning of September 6, a fire broke out at the landfill in Novorossiysk, the area of the fire was 900 square meters. The fire is accompanied by heavy smoke, and gusts of wind complicate the fight against the fire, the mayor of the city reported.
Fires regularly occur at the landfill near Mount Shchelba in Novorossiysk, which is why city residents complain about acrid smoke. City residents have repeatedly called for the landfill to be closed, but in the spring a tender was announced for its reconstruction, and the term of the landfill's operation was extended for two years. Social media users were outraged by plans to reconstruct the landfill. Another fire in the spring of 2025 lasted more than a month, from March 13 to April 17, after which Rosprirodnadzor initiated an administrative case against the owner of the landfill. By the end of 2025, two new waste disposal sites will be built at the solid municipal waste landfill in Novorossiysk as the current capacity of the landfill has been exhausted, the governor said on August 1. Expanding the landfill in Novorossiysk will not solve the environmental problem, but will only increase the risks, including fires, environmentalists and local residents said.
The area of the fire at the landfill in Novorossiysk is 800 square meters, the fire has been localized. Dump trucks made 177 trips, dumped more than 2.1 thousand cubic meters of soil, the city's mayor Andrei Kravchenko reported today.
More than thirty people and 28 pieces of equipment are involved in the work - tank trucks, water trucks, dump trucks, an excavator and bulldozers, he reported today on his Telegram channel.
The landfill in the village of Borisovka was organized in 2013, it is the only legalized site for the placement of waste from Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik. The capacity of the facility is 160 thousand tons of waste per year, however, according to the territorial scheme for handling solid municipal waste, about 230 thousand tons of waste are generated annually in Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik. In fact, the landfill accepts a significantly larger volume of garbage, and under such conditions, the landfill has "exhausted itself" ahead of schedule, said the head of the working group on ecology at the Council for the Development of Civil Society under the Governor of Kuban, Yevgeny Vitishko, in January 2024.
