Volunteers reported an increase in the number of birds covered in oil products in Anapa

After the oil spill in the waters of Novorossiysk, eight birds soiled with oil products were admitted to the rehabilitation center in Vityazevo.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on August 29, more than a ton of oil products spilled into the sea during the loading of a Turkish tanker at the KTK terminal, a local emergency regime was introduced in the port of Novorossiysk. Rosprirodnadzor reported that about 30 cubic meters of oil got into the sea, the spill was quickly localized. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium reported that the oil spill off the coast of Novorossiysk has been eliminated, and the local emergency situation has been lifted.

The sea in Novorossiysk and Anapa is covered with film and a dirty bird has come to us, volunteers from the Zhemchuzhnaya rehabilitation center reported. "Four black-necked grebes were admitted in 2 days, all covered in this stinking liquid. Chemical burns, intoxication, dehydration," they reported on August 31.

Later, it became known about four more birds covered in oil products that had already been admitted to the center.

Volunteers received four more calls from eyewitnesses who found dirty birds. "What the victims were covered in differs from fuel oil. There is a theory that the birds were covered in oil products that entered the waters of the Novorossiysk port on August 29," ecologist Zhora Kavanosyan wrote in his Telegram channel.

Fuel oil was found on all beaches in Anapa, on the coast in the Temryuk district (from the village of Veselovka to the village of Blagoveshchenskaya) and on the coast of the Sea of Azov in the Slavyansk district of Kuban, according to the "Caucasian Knot" report "The extent of fuel oil pollution in southern Russia".

On December 15, 2024, two tankers carrying fuel oil sank in the Kerch Strait. As a result, a crew member of one of the tankers died. In addition, an oil spill occurred, which led to catastrophic environmental consequences, according to the "Caucasian Knot" report "Fuel Oil Spill in the Kerch Strait".

Since the end of February, volunteers have reported an increase in the number of birds covered in fuel oil. They asked for help in saving the birds from everyone who has such an opportunity, indicating that there are not enough volunteers to help the birds. In total, since the beginning of the fuel oil spill, according to data as of February 27, the headquarters have received more than eight thousand birds. On April 1, ecologist Yevgeny Vitishko stated that since the beginning of the fuel oil spill, volunteers have picked up more than 8.4 thousand birds, but by the end of March the number of birds arriving had sharply decreased.

The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources stated that the beaches of Anapa and the Temryuk district are planned to be restored by the summer season of the next year, 2026. For several years, the beaches will be contaminated with fuel oil, the environmentalists disagreed.

According to experts, the restoration of the Black Sea biosystem after the fuel oil spill in the Kerch Strait will take from five to 10 years. Materials about the consequences of the fuel oil spill in the Krasnodar region have been collected by the "Caucasian Knot" on the thematic page "Eco-disaster in Kuban".
