Towing of cofferdams to sunken tanker parts near Anapa has begun
Cofferdams assembled in Novorossiysk are being towed by water to the sunken parts of fuel oil tankers that crashed near Anapa. Telegram users wondered whether their installation would lead to new fuel oil leaks.
As "Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote, by the beginning of June, federal authorities had allocated allocated almost 10 billion rubles for dismantling individual parts of the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers, sealing the sunken parts, designing protective domes, surveying and monitoring pollution of the sea with oil products.
The tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 will be raised from the water in 2026 after the fuel oil under the protective domes (cofferdams) has been completely pumped out. At the first stage, the protruding structural elements will be cut off from the tankers and raised to the surface. Then the fragments of the tankers will be localized using cofferdams at a depth of up to 20 meters, after which the fuel oil will be pumped out and parts of the ships and the protective structures themselves will be raised to the surface, the Ministry of Transport explained.
The towing of cofferdams to the sunken tankers with fuel oil in the Black Sea has begun, ecologist Zhora Kavanosyan reported on his Telegram channel, publishing a video in which two ships are towing the structures across the sea.
The structures will be installed over the wreckage of the tankers, thereby localizing them. Then they will begin pumping out oil products, he said.
On August 22, the Russian government reported on its Telegram channel that the assembly of metal structures of three cofferdams is being completed in the Novorossiysk seaport.
The message about towing cofferdams was reposted by the author of the Telegram channel "Makovozovy", which has 33,970 subscribers. By 14:48, it had collected seven comments. Users were interested in the consequences of installing protection. "I wonder if there will be more fuel oil on the shore after the lift?" asked Yulia Golovanova.
"Maybe somehow without lifting, they will pump it out when the tanker is under this sarcophagus and that's it..." suggested Tatyana Firsatnova.
As a result of the environmental disaster in the Kerch Strait, Rospotrebnadzor recognized 141 beaches in Anapa and nine beaches in the Temryuk district as unsuitable for recreation. Fuel oil was found on all beaches in Anapa, on the coast in the Temryuk district and on the coast of the Sea of Azov in the Slavyansk district of Kuban, according to the Caucasian Knot report "The extent of fuel oil pollution in southern Russia".
