Three Russian servicemen perish in Abkhazia

Five servicemen from the Russian military base situated in Abkhazia fell victim to a fall of an armoured personnel carrier (APC) into the gorge, the Southern Military District has reported.

The accident occurred on January 18. "During a march of a column of military equipment from the "Tsabal" mountain training range to the place of permanent deployment in Abkhazia, in a difficult road section, the APC overturned into the gorge," the TASS quotes the message of the Southern Military District.

Three military servicemen perished in the accident; three others were hospitalized.

According to a source from the power structures of Abkhazia, the APC that was carrying five persons fell from a height of about 40 meters.

The Commission of the Southern Military District is studying several versions of the accident, including a technical failure and the human factor.
