Sochi residents do not understand choice of date for City Day
Today, Sochi has started a three-day celebration of the City Day by opening fairs and exhibitions, and holding concerts and other events. The majority of interviewed citizens have confessed that they are still bewildered with the choice of the date for this relatively new city holiday.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Sochi began celebrating the City Day in 2014, appointed by the authorities for November 21. The holiday falls on Archangel Michael's Day, since Christians honour him as the patron saint of the resort city.
The celebrations were opened by a march of Cossack militarized units along Kurortny Avenue; today they will end with fireworks and a concert.
The events in honour of the Sochi City Day involve all the communities, about fifty in number, said Alexander Frolenkov, the Chairman of the Council of National Communities of Sochi.
Anatoly Pakhomov, the Sochi Mayor, has noted that City Days are celebrated in all major Russian cities as "a tribute to vogue, and perhaps the demand of time."
On the City Day, museums worked for free: according to organizers, today, they had over 5000 visitors.
