HRC "Memorial" succeeds in cancellation of police prevention registration for two residents of Dagestan

After the intervention of human rights defenders, the Prosecutor's Office has recognized as unjustified the inclusion in the police prevention registration list in the "extremist" category of two residents of Dagestan. This was reported by Galina Tarasova, a lawyer of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Dagestan, the law enforcement authorities actively use the practice of inclusion of residents of the republic in the prevention registration lists, often unreasonably, for example, because of the fact that a man wears a beard and visits a mosque.

According to Galina Tarasova, in late 2015, the HRC "Memorial" was addressed by two brothers, residents of the Leninsky District of Makhachkala. They claimed that "staff members of the local police station subjected them to prevention registration," although they were "absolutely law-abiding citizens."

The HRC "Memorial" appealed to the Leninsky District Prosecutor's Office and to the Ombudsman, who, in turn, forwarded the documents to the Prosecutor's Office. "The Prosecutor's Office has informed the brothers that the police should exclude their names from the prevention registration list," said Galina Tarasova.
