Prosecutor's Office demands to eliminate violations in Derbent SIZO
A Dagestani prosecutor has revealed violations of penitentiary, sanitary-epidemiological, fire-safety and labour legislation in SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 2 of the Dagestan Department of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN), located in the city of Derbent.
The revealed violations include the poor state of buildings and facilities of the SIZO, in particular, of walls, foundations, roofs and the vegetable storage. The bakery and the catering unit have insufficient range of necessary production facilities; their interior decoration is contrary to sanitary standards.
The SIZO lacks rooms for the medical staff; and the regime block has no supply-exhaust ventilation and fire alarm systems; the website of the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 31 the Derbent SIZO was visited by members of the Council under the Russian President for Development of Civil Society and Human Rights (known as the HRC).
Rights defenders found no human rights violations, said Andrei Babushkin, a member of the HRC. According to his story, "everything is fine" with the medical help; the food is good, the custody conditions are generally acceptable. At the same time, rights defenders noted that there are very stuffy cells in the SIZO, where it is very hard to stay.
