Defenders of Arghishti Kiviryan appeal to ECtHR

The advocates, who represent the interests of Arghishti Kiviryan, the coordinator of the online edition "Armenia Today", have filed an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against the court's decision to impose a fine on the activist.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Lusine Saakyan, an advocate of Arghishti Kiviryan, that on April 4, 2014, in the course of the march in support of Shant Arutyunyan, the leader of the "Tsegakron" Party, and other participants of the action "Million Mask March", Arghishti Kiviryan was detained in front of the building of the General Prosecutor's Office of Armenia.

According to Lusine Saakyan, the police drew up a protocol on administrative violation. The first instance court of general jurisdiction of the administrative districts of Kentron and Nork-Marash fined Arghishti Kiviryan 50,000 drams (about 105 US dollars). The administrative court and the court of cassation upheld the court's decision.

Arghishti Kiviryan has reported that his advocates Lusine Saakyan and Yervand Varosyan filed an appeal to ECtHR against the decision of the court.

Let us remind you that Arghishti Kiviryan was also earlier arrested on August 1, 2013, when he made an attempt to install a tent in front of the Yerevan Mayor's Office, where activists were carrying out a hunger strike with the demand of the resignation of Misak Ambartsumyan, the chief of the Transport Department and the director of the "Yerevantrans". According to the activists, Misak Ambartsumyan initiated the rise of fares in public transport in the city.
