"Women of the Don" not refunded after exclusion from registry of foreign agents

The Union "Women of the Don" has been excluded by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) from the register of foreign agents, but the fine of 300,000 roubles, paid by the Union under the court judgement, has not been repaid. The money can be returned only upon the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on the case, said Valentina Cherevatenko, the Chair of the Union.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 14, 2014, the Novocherkassk City Court satisfied the claim of the prosecutor's office and obliged the "Women of the Don" to get registered as a foreign agent. Then, the Union was fined by 300,000 roubles. In September 2015, the Union filed a complaint against the court ruling to the ECtHR.

On February 29, the Russian MoJ announced the termination of functioning of the Union "Women of the Don" as a foreign agent.

The MoJ's decision of February 29 does not mean that the fine will be returned, said Valentina Cherevatenko, adding: "The fine had been paid a long time ago; the money can be only returned in case of the ECtHR's decision in our favour."
