Karaulova's defence files complaint to ECtHR
The advocates of Varvara Karaulova (Alexandra Ivanova), a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), accused of an attempt to join the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organizations, banned in Russia, ask the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to consider the complaint in the priority order.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 4, 2015, Karaulova was detained at the Turkish-Syrian border in a group of Russians, who, according to investigators, had intended to join the IS. Her case received a wide public resonance; and Karaulova decided to change her name, becoming Alexandra Ivanova. On October 28, she was arrested by a Moscow court; on November 10, she pled guilty, but later abandoned her confessions. She is in custody until March 27. Her advocate Sergey Badamshin complained that Varvara's advocates and relatives could not visit her at the SIZO (pre-trial prison).
According to the advocate, the complaint sent to the ECtHR, states a violation of several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the "Interfax" reports. In particular, an unjustified placement of Karaulova behind bars, and a violation committed during the investigation.
