In Armenia, investigators prepare materials about incident in Freedom Square
In Armenia, the special investigating service is preparing the materials on the basis of complaints filed by six supporters of the "New Armenia", including arrested Gevorg Safaryan. According to the complaints, during the New Year's incident in Freedom Square, policemen went beyond their official authority and used force. The "Armenian National Congress" (ANC) and the "Human Rights Watch" (HRW) also pay attention to the use of violence by the policemen.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 31, 2015, law enforcers did not allow one of the supporters of the "New Armenia" dressed as a Christmas tree to enter Freedom Square. A clash occurred between the activists and the policemen, and as a result, about 10 people were injured.
According to Tigran Airapetyan, an advocate of the activist, his clients demand to punish the policemen responsible for the conflict.
Earlier, the Armenian National Congress has claimed the use of violence by the policemen during the incident and called for the release of Gevorg Safaryan. Members of the ANC have condemned "an assault on human rights."
On January 5, members of the HRW sent a letter to Gevorg Kostanyan, General Prosecutor of Armenia. In their letter, they have expressed their concern about the arrest of Gevorg Safaryan during the preliminary investigation.
