Relatives of figurants of rape case stop hunger strike in Dagestan

In Makhachkala, relatives of Khasavyurt residents, accused of raping a minor, have stopped their protest because of deterioration of their health.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that relatives of those accused of raping and one of the defendants went on a hunger strike on December 9 in Makhachkala. They state that the criminal case was fabricated case. On December 18, one of the hunger-strikers – Saigid Gadjiev, the father of the defendant Murad Gadjiev – was hospitalized. Then, seven persons continued their hunger strike.

According to Nina Abdulgamidova, a hunger-striker and the mother of the defendant Said Abdulgamidov, the hunger strike was stopped because of the deterioration of the participants' health.

The advocate Sapiyat Magomedova said that on December 18 she had a telephone conversation with the Dagestani Ombudsperson Ummupazil Omarova, who told her that she had informed the public prosecutor of the republic about the hunger strike and the relatives' demands.

"The prosecutor told her that the case is in the court; and he is no right to interfere into the process," said Magomedova.
