Dunja Mijatovic condemns attack on journalists in Nardaran
Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, has demanded from the Azerbaijani authorities to investigate the attack on journalists, who highlighted the events in Nardaran.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 26, believers and policemen clashed in the village of Nardaran. As a result, four members of the movement "Muslim Unity" and two policemen were killed. After that, the local residents gathered for a spontaneous rally. A crew of the "ATV" TV Channel was attacked while they highlighted the events. Windows of the journalists' car were shattered, and their driver was beaten.
According to Dunja Mijatovic, apart from the attacks on the crew of the "ATV" TV Channel, a camera man of the public "ITV" TV Channel was also beaten while he was highlighting the events in Nardaran, and his equipment is damaged.
"It was an unacceptable act of violence used against representatives of media. Journalists are to cover the information of public interest in free and safe environment. Their safety should be ensured," the "Contact.az" quotes Dunja Mijatovic as stating on November 27.
Dunja Mijatovic has demanded from the Azerbaijani authorities to do everything possible to investigate the attacks on the journalists and to bring the guilty persons to justice, the "Trend" reports.
